Château-Arnoux - Saint-Auban is located on the right bank of the River Durance, just upstream from its confluence with the River Bléone.
In the Middle Ages, the original heart of the medieval settlement was on the site of Villevieille, perched on the Saint-Jean hill. What is now known as the “old village” only started to develop around the new castle from the XVth and XVIth centuries onwards.
More recently, the history of Château-Arnoux in the XXth century has been dominated by the development of the industrial site of Saint-Auban. Today Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban is the fourth largest town in the department, with more than 5 000 inhabitants.In Saint-Auban there is an airfield and the National Gliding Centre.
